The first time you lock eyes with that piece of jewellery in the store, it glimmers. The stones sparkle and the metal catches every ray of light and it is love at first sight! The trouble comes when it starts to lose that sparkle.
Well fear not, there are steps to take to avoid tarnishing your beloved piece of jewellery and reviving it when it starts to lose its sparkle.
Tender Love: Take off your jewellery before attempting any activities which will cause them to be knocked about or dented. Gold and Chlorine are like oil and water and do not mix so avoid jacuzzis and chlorinated swimming pools and be sure to wear a pair of gloves before using cleaning products (they contain harsh chemicals). Be sure also to avoid coming in contact with mercury as this can permanently damage your jewellery.
Care: For a quick fix, mild soap and lukewarm water can be used to clean your jewellery. After a thorough rinsing, it must be dried with a chamois which is a soft cloth specially made for cleaning jewellery and is available in jewellery stores. But better still, take your piece to your jeweller for a proper steam clean.
Interestingly, White Gold actually has a natural grey colour and so has to be coated with Rhodium to give it its ‘white’ look and over time your jewellery will have to be taken to a professional to reapply this coating and help it sparkle once more!
Be sure to always store your jewellery separately to avoid damage and always keep them wrapped in a soft cloth and housed in a jewellery box.
